Community Observatory - Placerville, California

Cute wholesome fun! Nice little observatory that is FREE to the public Fri-Sun (donations recommended and also parking is $2). They have a few telescopes to look at and a viewing pit where they point out stars. Bring a jacket for those cold nights and it is a little walk up there but the walkway is lit. Was busy on the Friday I went and it was 34 degrees, lots of kids and families!

We picked the most crazy weekend to visit when all the planets aligned so it was overwhelming. Lots of people rude and cutting lines. The people had been so loud we could not even hear the presentation by staff. Also phones out in every hand despite the clearly posted and known no phone rule. I will say the kids here running it knew a lot and honestly we loved them. It is definitely not at fault for others behavior but it made it not fun for us

We had so much fun. Incredibly knowledgeable docents who gave a great education to everyone and were friendly. It is a very nice facility. A great place for families or a unique date night. We definitely want to go back.

It's a place you must visit. Take your kids. Inculcate and indulge in love for science and space. It's very special to observe and appreciate celestial events with fellow space geeks in the community

I was feeling the loss of a vision of our galaxy created by Nature, but it was eased a great deal for me because of the surprisingly loving and social concern by the individuals at the Community Observatory in Placerville.
The staff there were so considerate and responsive to the people gathered!

My history involves a lot of "religious" experiences where one expects there to be loving concern for the participants, but often none was actually displayed or even felt.
Conversely, at the Observatory, every child, no matter how young or whether accompanied by an adult, was not only listened to, but responded to on a remarkably concerned and informed level. My own mobility difficulties have been universally ignored and even belittled in my past, but they were acknowledged by consideration and concern until it was assured that my experience was as pleasant and comfortable as it was possible to be.

I have come across some few people in my life that really seem aware of others and interested in their experience at the time, but never on the level that I felt at the Observatory. All the volunteers gave their attention and response to every individual on the scene, seeking their freely given attention. Those young people were treated with respect and their questions were answered in interesting and educational ways.

I have loved teaching and being taught all my life. I hold the credentials of a licensed teacher and I have never seen a better teaching environment anywhere. All the individuals around me were more involved and engaged in teaching and enriching our experience than I have ever experienced before. It was a dream come true for me.

If that atmosphere could be achieved universally it would be the joy of every student and educator.

Amazing place to look up at the stars and learn about our amazing universe. The volunteers were very kind and knowledgeable. It was our first time visiting, and didn’t know what to expect, but it was truly memorable. Great for people of all ages.
