Damon is a great guitar teacher. He has that rare talent that all great teachers have, no matter how new, or how bad; he can find something you did well and teach you how to do it better.

He was formally a Mac Genius which means he is both talented and well organized. After every lesson he uploads a recording of the session to your own private website where he also posts notes, lyrics and images to help you improve.

I started lessons after spending about 3 years learning on my own, relying mostly on YouTube videos and the game Rocksmith (it’s a great tool, but only got me so far). I’d reached a point where I felt like I’d maxed out my potential and patience, but the improvements I’ve been able to make over the past 6 months with Damon have been practically exponential.

One of the main goals I set with Damon was to be able to grab a guitar and play in key – a concept I could barely grasp at the time. I could play open chords just fine, but learning to play barre chords was frustrating and painful enough to make me give up - even tips I’d gotten from experienced guitarists didn’t help. I would look up the chords to a song and if they included anything other than a simple open chord progression, I would move on. This was very limiting - I’d never feel motivated to learn an entire song, and any riff I picked up made no sense beyond how closely it matched what I was hearing in a song.

This has changed dramatically with Damon’s guidance and feedback. I now feel like I can tackle any song (at least when it comes to playing rhythm), and moving around the neck has become much easier and more intuitive, thanks to his skill at simplifying and distilling information down to the fundamentals. I have some teaching experience, and it’s clear to me that he knows what he’s doing. He knows when to push, when to slow down, and most importantly, it’s obvious that he cares about his work and the results his students get.

Over the time I spent with him, my understanding and appreciation of music have grown far beyond expectations. He helped spark a renewed excitement and unlocked a new level of commitment in me that extends beyond playing guitar. The end of every lesson would come way too soon, and the decision to move on was a tough one - I would have continued on with Damon for years if I had the time and money to spend, but the foundation I built with him will undoubtedly last a lifetime.
