An excellent birding area with well-defined dirt pathways around the pond and through the trees surrounding it. Ample parking and access to the bike path.

Any time I have an opportunity to photograph birds and other wildlife, I jump at the opportunity. So when circumstances led my family to live in an airbnb for a while, I was delighted to learn that the El Rio Preserve was literally two miles away.

Although not quite as developed as some preserves I have experienced, El Rio has great walking and biking trails that take you around the preserve itself. There are also good paths and alcoves close to the water for better bird watching. It also has a covered area with tables and a restroom.

I not only took time to walk around the preserve itself, which was quite enjoyable, but to do a little birding. To my amazement, I was able to add several new species to my birding pictures and list!

If you are looking for a pleasant neighborhood destination to walk, bike, do some birding, or just enjoy being outside, give El Rio Preserve a try. I give it a big thumbs-up?. ❤️

Beautiful...only complaint is....no fishing doesn't look deep enough anyway but another fishing spot would be dope.

One of my more favorite sections of The Loop, there is a lot here.
Of course you have The Loop multi-use paved trails, but there's a small park by the pond, a small playground, disc golf, and on the nearby lava-rock mountain, ancient Native American petroglyphs.
Along the Santa Cruz (mind all safety signs during Monsoon and rainy periods) there are stands of native plants, many animals and birds, and even stands of wild bamboo.
Watch out for venomous snakes in warmer weather, but get out and explore!
