Van Horne house. Tour given on Somerset county history weekend. Lots of fun. Characters in costume, learned about colonial marriages, and how to do a dance. Punch and cookies.

We had a lovely evening of Colonial Age dancing. Most people came in period attire, many having attended the battle reenactment the day and night before. I was a mundane, in modern dress, but felt very welcomed, so don't let your lack of costume dissuade you.

They taught the dances with patience and all was fun.

I actually attended a book review with my friend and it turns out that the woman who was reviewing her book happened to be a woman I actually canvas last year for the DNC. She was smartly dressed as a suffragette period dress in hope to vote white dress with her sliced yellow slash. She brought the block of history alive that day by allowing us to know that there was a lot of shenanigans by the men to overcome the women's right to vote, women in New Jersey voted until the men sneakily took it away. It was quite intriguing the way she put the time period that actually brought it alive. I would have definitely gone back for the dancing classes. Had not the virus stopped since such activities. After things go back to wherever they're going to be. I hope to be able to return to that place.

Visited during the "Journey into the Past" weekend in October. They simulated a wedding ball which included dancing, toasting, and a cleverly done horse race, run by folks in period dress. It was a very nice visit for both parents and the kids.

A must visit in October when Somerset County does the weekend journey. All the historical sites are open this weekend, but the Van Horne House always puts on a show above and beyond the rest. The house is open on and off during the year, so you need to check when it's open. They also are available for private tours and events.

Great place to checkout history in your own county. See where George Washington stayed between Pennsylvania and New York. Also see what they did and lived in those times
