Small but exquisite collection. When I visited they had no less than four artworks by John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), my favorite artist, on display. Also nice artworks by Elizabeth Catlett, Nan Goldin, Larry Sultan, Troy Jones, and Dread Scott. Also great museum store. I was slightly disappointed that no art by Morgan Russell (1886-1953) was on display but I hope that changes in future rotations of the permanent collection. Morgan Russell is currently prominently featured in the "Orphism" exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum. The Montclair Art Museum held a retrospective on Morgan Russell in 1990 for which I was fortunate to find the monograph at a local antique store.

Great art museum! There are renovations going so most of the museum is closed but what I saw was amazing and really informative. A lot to learn and I look forward to returning when the renovations are completed.

I am a passionate advocate for mental health and disability inclusion, and it’s disheartening to see that in many artsy spaces in the area, like the Montclair Art Museum, the sense of belonging and inclusivity we all deserve is missing. Art, a medium that often transcends boundaries and celebrates the diversity of human expression, should be a welcoming space for everyone. Unfortunately, what I’ve observed is a lack—not just in racial and ethnic diversity, but in the broader spectrum of representation and inclusion. It’s time for these spaces to embody the boundless spirit of art by becoming more open and accessible to people from all walks of life.

Diverse and eclectic collection, I just had to skip half of the galleries (Native art one was closed), but the other half as well as some modern art installations was ok. Permanent collection of George Inness’ works is alone worth the visit, another interesting exhibition is Siona Benjamin’s art. Some of the modern art exhibits created from old trash (upcycled art) are not bad, but it blends/looks better being on streets as done in some European cities rather than being part of museum.

The Montclair Art Museum is a community hub! The museum offers so many amazing events including performances, lectures, hands on art, and more - many of which are free! The exhibits are dynamic, thought-provoking, and far-reaching in subject, feel, and material. I can’t recommend becoming a regular here more highly!

The Vanessa German Exhibition is beautiful and interesting. Lovely museum, clean and has free parking. Looking forward to visiting again.

They had a funeral or memorial on the first floor, it was so loud. Definitely did not expect that.
