Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark

MUST SEE while in Birmingham to understand how this city grew with this iron mill. Just very interesting to walk through this massive plant and learn how this plant was instrumental in the growth of Birmingham. Took the self-guided tour. Lots of interesting souvenirs in the gift shop too.

Sloss furnaces are the best place for our Furnace Fest! Great bands and excellent location. Enjoyed exploring the old furnaces on the campus and touching base with the local artists using the furnaces on the opposite side. Great fun with creative iron pieces!

Very, very interesting place to visit. There is a lot to see here with a self guided tour that explains the process of pig iron production as well as what life for the workers was like back in those days. A must visit for some Birmingham history.

Beautiful place to walk around and see the history of the early steel and iron industry. Very well preserved. Free to roam around, donations accepted in the visitors center.

Visited Sloss furnaces for a private evening event. I was so stunned by the structures and history of this place. I took At least an hour if not more, just to take in the whole site. There were even people creating metal art pieces in the workshop area while we were there. Take your time when you visit and be sure to explore all the buildings and pathways connecting them. I would definately come back if visiting again to see the gift shop and visitors center since they were closed for the evening.

Finally got the chance to briefly visit this piece of American history in early January. Been wanting to bring my camera here for years, and it didn't disappoint. It was a self guided tour and a slow day, so I got the whole place to myself. This vast beautiful fossil of America's industrial boom will require a long leisurely day to capture it right. Luckily there's a nice brewpub across the road from it. It was surprisingly accessible for my elderly dad, though I wouldn't recommend bringing pets or small children as there are many places for them to disappear, fall, or get stuck. Would be a fascinating tour through history and manufacturing for an older kid though.

Great place to get to learn more about what drove the development of the area. Good idea preserving it for all those to see. Enjoyed it a lot.

Very well preserved old blast furnace site. You can take a self guided tour or a tour with a tour guide. Be aware that there are not many tours per day. We were here on a weekday and there was only one tour that day. Check the website for times. There are explanatory plaques, if you take a self guided tour. As a geek, I would have appreciated some more in depth technical descriptions, but still very interesting. The tour guide didn't understand the technology, but did a great job describing the lives of the workers.
